O-phospho-L-serine is a direct precursor in the synthesis of L-serine. It is an agonist of type III metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR4, mGluR7, mGluR8) and has no affinity for type I metabotropic glutamate receptors. It is also a competitive antagonist of NMDA receptors.
