Zinc oxide is an inorganic compound with a chemical formula of ZnO and a molecular weight of 81.39 g/mol. It is a white solid and a form of zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is insoluble in water and ethanol, but soluble in acid,  and ammonium chloride. It is a commonly used chemical additive and is widely used in the production of plastics, silicate products, synthetic rubber, lubricants, paints and coatings, ointments, adhesives, foods, batteries, flame retardants and other products. Zinc oxide has a large band gap and exciton binding energy, high transparency, and excellent room-temperature luminescence properties. It is used in liquid crystal displays, thin-film transistors, light-emitting diodes and other products in the semiconductor field. Zinc oxide is also an important sunscreen because it can absorb ultraviolet radiation . In addition, microparticles of zinc oxide as a nanomaterial are also used in related fields.

Zinc oxide is used as a vulcanizing activator, reinforcing agent and colorant for natural rubber, synthetic rubber and latex in the rubber or cable industry to make the rubber have good corrosion resistance, tear resistance and elasticity. It is a colorant and filler for white glue and a vulcanizing agent in chloroprene rubber. Those with fine particles (particle size of about 0.1μm) can be used as a light stabilizer for plastics such as polyolefins or polyvinyl chloride. The thermal conductivity of typical pure silicone rubber is relatively low; the thermal conductivity of silicone rubber can be improved by adding ZnO thermal conductive powder while maintaining its high electrical resistance. The addition of nanoscale fillers can achieve high thermal conductivity even at relatively low filling contents. However, due to the weak interaction between the surface of the nanoparticles and the polymer, ZnO nanoparticles tend to aggregate together to form large-sized particles in the polymer matrix, affecting the mechanical properties of the rubber.

Zinc oxide is used in textile coatings. Waterproof and self-cleaning textiles have promising uses in  applications and commercial applications for everyday use. Self-cleaning and waterproof textiles help prevent stains on clothing and can protect the body from the harmful UV part of sunlight. Nanostructured ZnO coatings are more breathable and more effective as UV blockers than their bulk counterparts.

Zinc oxide is used in dentistry, primarily as an ingredient in toothpaste, but also in temporary fillings. ZnO is also used in various types of nutritional products and dietary supplements to provide essential dietary zinc.
