O-phospho-L-serine is a direct precursor in the synthesis of L-serine. It is an agonist of type III metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR4, mGluR7, mGluR8) and has no affinity for type I metabotropic glutamate receptors. It is also a competitive antagonist of NMDA receptors.

 

Specific mechanism of action
Excitement of type III metabotropic glutamate receptors: O-phospho-L-serine enhances intracellular calcium response in mGluR4-transfected cells and inhibits l-glutamate-mediated mGluR1 response.

Antagonism of NMDA receptors: O-phospho-L-serine, as a competitive antagonist of NMDA receptors, can inhibit the activity of NMDA receptors.
