(1) Plant growth regulator
Recent studies have shown that 5-ALA has the following effects: regulating the synthesis of chlorophyll; improving the stability of chlorophyll and light-harvesting system II; improving photosynthetic efficiency and promoting photosynthesis; promoting plant tissue differentiation, inhibiting respiration in the dark, and expanding stomata and other basic physiological activities. Therefore, it is not simply a biological metabolic intermediate, but also participates in the regulation process of plant growth and development, has physiological activities similar to plant hormones, and can be used as a plant growth regulator in agricultural production.
(2) Green herbicides
Herbicides produced using 5-ALA can kill dicot weeds, but are harmless to monocot crops such as cereals, wheat, and barley, and have a selective weed control effect.
There are two mechanisms of action: the first is to inhibit the gene expression of GluTR and prevent the synthesis of 5-ALA, so that the plant eventually dies due to lack of 5-ALA. 5-ALA synthesis in mammals does not go through the C5 pathway, so the use of this type of herbicide will not have adverse effects on the human body.
