In vitro experiments showed that lycorine significantly inhibited aerobic glycolysis, but had no significant effect on the respiration and anaerobic glycolysis of cancer cells. Lycorine has a significant inhibitory effect on mouse lymphosarcoma, sarcoma 37 and rat lymphosarcoma and liver cancer cells; it also has an inhibitory effect on HeLa cells, sarcoma 180, Ehrlich ascites cancer, ascites liver cancer and Yoshida sarcoma. Lycorine can inhibit adenosine triphosphatase, and this effect may be related to its cytotoxic effect.

Lycorine has only a weak inhibitory effect on cholinesterase. Subcutaneous injection of a small amount of lycorine in rabbits or rats has a slight effect of lowering blood sugar and can reduce hyperglycemia in rats caused, but a larger amount only significantly increases blood sugar. Lycorine can also inhibit drug metabolism, similar to SKF-525A, but the effect is weaker. It has a killing effect on amoeba. Intraperitoneal injection of lycorine 6mg/kg into rats can significantly increase the excretion of uric acid.
