Akkermansia muciniphila is a normal bacterium in the human intestine. It is a mucin-degrading bacterium. The strain MucT was isolated by Derrien in 2004. It is an oval, Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium and a representative of the Verrucomicrobia. A. muciniphila is negatively correlated with obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and low-grade inflammation. Oral administration of Akkermansia muciniphila can improve the symptoms related to metabolic diseases in mice. Akkermansia muciniphila is expected to become a candidate drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity.
