Several studies have indicated the important role of B. longum in human health. B. longum is the most common Bifidobacterium species found in the GIT in both infants and adults. Duranti et al. (2017) reported that B. longum was the one of the most abundant Bifidobacterium species in breast-fed infants. Both intra-intestinal and extra-intestinal diseases such as Crohn's disease (CD) and allergic reactions have been associated with alterations in the abundance of B. longum. A significant difference in the levels of B. longum was seen between healthy children (30.3%) and those with allergic disease (11.1%). Palma et al. also reported a lower level of B. longum in the feces of patients with CD than in healthy control subjects. In contrast, oral uptake of B. longum has been proven to provide health-promoting effects in humans. This probiotic can effectively protect against autoimmune diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic syndromes such as obesity and hyperlipidemia, and brain-gut disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and chronic colitis
