Albendazole is a highly effective broad-spectrum anthelmintic. It is one of the benzoimidazole drugs with a broad anthelmintic spectrum and the strongest insecticidal effect. It is highly active against nematodes, schistosomes, and tapeworms, and has a significant inhibitory effect on the development of worm eggs. The drug is rapidly metabolized into sulfoxide and sulfone in the body, which inhibits the polymerization of the cytoplasmic microtubule system of the parasite's intestinal wall cells, blocks the parasite's absorption of various nutrients and glucose, leading to the depletion of the parasite's glycogen, while inhibiting the reduction of fumaric acid. The enzyme system blocks the production of adenosine triphosphate, making it impossible for the parasite to survive and reproduce.

Common dosage for adults: For roundworm and pinworm, 400 mg is taken orally at once; for hookworm and whipworm, 400 mg is taken twice a day for 3 consecutive days; for trichinosis, 800 mg is taken daily in 2 doses for 1 week; for cysticercosis, the dosage is 20 mg/kg per day according to body weight, taken orally in 3 doses, 10 days is a course of treatment, generally 1 to 3 courses of treatment are required. The interval between courses of treatment depends on the condition; for echinococcosis, the dosage is 20 mg/kg per day according to body weight, taken orally in 2 doses, 1 month is a course of treatment, generally more than 5 courses of treatment are required. The interval between courses of treatment is 7 to 10 days. The dosage for children under 12 years old is halved.
Albendazole is used to expel roundworms, pinworms, hookworms, and whipworms. It can also be used for deworming livestock.
