Calcium lactate is a white crystalline salt with formula C6H10CaO6,consisting of two lactate anions H3C(CHOH)CO−2 for each calcium cation Ca2+.It forms several hydrates, the most common being the pentahydrate C6H10CaO6·5H2O.Calcium lactate can be prepared by the reaction of lactic acid with calcium carbonate or calcium hydroxide.
Calcium lactate is often used as a food additive to enhance the calcium content of foods, replace other salts, or increase the overall pH (decrease acidity) of the food,it is most often used as a firming agent, a flavor enhancer or flavoring agent, a leavening agent, a nutritional supplement, and a stabilizer and thickener.
Calcium lactate can also be added to calcium supplements or medications used to treat calcium deficiencies,acid reflux, bone loss, a poorly functioning parathyroid gland, or certain muscle diseases.Calcium lactate is used in medicine as an antacid.The compound is also found in some mouth washes and toothpaste as an anti-tartar agent.
Calcium lactate may also be added to animal feed as a source of calcium or used to treat water to make it suitable for human consumption.Addition of calcium lactate substantially increases the compressive strength and reduces water permeability of bioconcrete, by enabling bacteria to produce more calcite.
