Acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol or acetaminophen, is an organic compound with a chemical formula of C8H9NO2. It is a metabolite of phenacetin in the body. It inhibits the prostaglandin synthase in the hypothalamic thermoregulatory center and reduces the synthesis and release of prostaglandins PGE1, bradykinin and histamine. Acetaminophen is often used to relieve headaches, toothaches, menstrual cramps, muscle pain and other common types of pain, as well as to relieve fever symptoms caused by colds, flu or other diseases. Because it is less irritating to the stomach, it is generally considered safer than other over-the-counter pain medications, especially for children and pregnant women. Unlike other common analgesics such as aspirin and ibuprofen, acetaminophen has a lower anti-inflammatory effect, making it a safer choice for those who cannot use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, excessive use of acetaminophen may cause serious side effects, especially liver damage. Therefore, it is necessary to strictly follow the dosage instructions when using it and avoid taking it in combination with other drugs containing acetaminophen.
